Men’s Skincare: Dry Skin Quick Fixes & Solutions

Desert Tundra Symbolizing Dry Skin

Men’s skincare, especially when dealing with dry skin, doesn’t have to be complicated. Understanding and treating dry skin effectively is crucial for not just looking good, but feeling good too. First, let’s clear up a common mix-up: the difference between dry and dehydrated skin.

Understanding Dry Skin vs. Dehydrated Skin

Dry skin is marked by a lack of oil and often feels rough to the touch and looks flaky. Dehydrated skin, on the other hand, lacks water. Dry skin is often dehydrated, but dehydrated skin doesn’t have to be dry. This can even affect oily skin types, leading to the false assumption of dryness due to a feeling of tightness. This mix-up is often fueled by aggressive marketing that can confuse even the savviest gentleman.

Signs of Dry Skin:

  • Prone to cracking and rough patches, like neglected leather.
  • Moisturizer absorbs faster than a sponge.
  • A shiny oil sheen is nowhere in sight.
  • Pores are so small, they might as well be a myth.

Signs of Oily Skin:

  • Pores are large and quite visible.
  • Shine that is especially unflattering on camera.
  • Moisturizers tend to escalate oil to slick levels.
  • Prone to more breakouts.

Managing Dry Skin: Strategies and Ingredients

Dehydrated skin just needs hydration, so look for Glycerin, Hyaluronic Acid, try adding in a hydrating serum, or applying your products to wet skin. If your skin is dry, here’s how to bring back the balance without turning your bathroom into a chemistry lab.

  • Avoid/Minimize Harsh Ingredients or Products: Retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, high alcohol content products, and harsh exfoliants can all make your situation worse. These strip your skin, so it is best to use these sparingly. You will be able to find out what works for you by changing things up.
  • Moderate Shower Temperature and Frequency: Hot showers might be the highlight of your day, but your skin might not agree. Opt for lukewarm and quicker showers to keep your skin from drying out like a raisin. Or at least avoid having the hot water on your face.
  • Choose Gentle Cleansers: Instead of strong cleansers that strip your skin, pick something gentle that leaves you feeling rejuvenated. Our Deep Hydrating Cleanser is a good choice, but alternatively you can look for a cream cleanser.
  • Petrolatum Is Your Friend: Try using Vaseline, Aquaphor, Cerave Healing Ointment, or your classic White Petroleum Jelly at bedtime. These are highly occlusive, meaning they prevent water from evaporating from your skin. This helps your skin with regulating  itself and is great for getting your skin barrier under control.

Enhancing the Skin Barrier

To fortify your skin’s defenses and keep it from flaking off like a bad paint job, consider these ingredients:

  • Barrier-Supporting Ingredients: Niacinamide, borage seed oil, and ceramides are like the special forces for your skin’s defense, reinforcing your skin’s natural barriers.
  • Moisture-Retaining Ingredients: Embrace products with allantoin, shea butter, dimethicone, lanolin, petrolatum, and mineral oil. These ingredients lock in moisture like a vault, preventing the loss of hydration.
